Chromatin fibre, artwork
Chromatin fibre. Computer artwork of strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, green) coiled around histone cores (multicoloured) to form a chromatin fibre. The coiled ribbon structures in the cores represent the molecular structure of the histone proteins. DNA, the molecule that carries the genetic code that forms the basis of all life on Earth, is found in cell nuclei. It is a long molecule and has to be tightly coiled to fit inside the nucleus. Each set of two DNA loops around a histone core is known as a nucleosome. Further compacting and packaging of these units (as seen here) forms chromatin. The chromatin is then packaged with more proteins (not seen) to form the cells chromosomes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Chromatin Fibre" showcases the intricate beauty of DNA and its packaging within cell nuclei. In this computer-generated image, strands of green DNA are elegantly coiled around multicolored histone cores, forming a chromatin fibre. The ribbon-like structures within the cores represent the molecular structure of histone proteins. DNA, as we know, carries the genetic code that serves as the foundation for all life on Earth. However, due to its lengthy nature, it must be tightly condensed to fit inside the nucleus of a cell. Each set of two DNA loops around a histone core is referred to as a nucleosome – an essential unit in this compacting process. The image also highlights how further compaction and packaging occur beyond nucleosomes to form chromatin. Although not visible in this artwork, additional proteins contribute to creating chromosomes within cells. This stunning illustration beautifully captures various aspects of biology and biochemistry: from molecular models and protein structures to genetic information and cellular organization. It serves as a reminder of both the complexity and elegance found within our biological systems.
