Charles Dwight Sigsbee, US naval officer

Charles Dwight Sigsbee (1845-1923), US naval officer and oceanographer. Sigsbee is best known as the captain of the USS Maine, whose explosion in Havana, Cuba, in February 1898 was one of the catalysts for the Spanish American War. Between 1875 and 1878 he worked on the Coast Survey for the Naval Academy Hydrographic Office. During this time he invented the Sigsbee sounding machine for measuring the depth of water. This device became the standard equipment for deep sea sounding and was used for the next 50 years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the essence of Charles Dwight Sigsbee, a remarkable figure in American naval history. As a distinguished US naval officer and oceanographer, Sigsbee's legacy is deeply intertwined with pivotal moments in our nation's past. Best known as the captain of the USS Maine, his leadership was tragically tested when an explosion rocked Havana, Cuba in February 1898. This catastrophic event became one of the catalysts for the Spanish American War, forever altering the course of history. However, Sigsbee's contributions extended far beyond this fateful incident. During his tenure at the Naval Academy Hydrographic Office from 1875 to 1878, he revolutionized deep sea sounding with his groundbreaking invention – the Sigsbee sounding machine. This ingenious device quickly became standard equipment for measuring ocean depths and remained in use for half a century. In this monochrome portrait, we see a resolute man donning his navy uniform and spectacles while holding a sword by his side. His piercing gaze reflects both determination and intellect as he stands before us as an embodiment of courage and scientific innovation. Preserved by Library of Congress' archives, this print serves as a testament to Charles Dwight Sigsbee's lasting impact on oceanography, hydrography, and naval operations alike. It immortalizes not only an individual but also an era defined by exploration and transformation on land and sea.
