Banded sea urchin
Banded sea urchin (Echinothrix calamaris). The sea urchin is an echinoderm, a relative of the star fish. Its exoskeleton shell, or test, is covered in spines that protect it from predators. The banded sea urchin has two types of spine, long thin venomous spines capable of a nasty sting, and larger banded tubular spines with open ends. It is found near coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region and can reach diameters of 15 centimetres. It feeds at night on algae that it scrapes from the surface of rocks. Photographed in the Andaman Sea, Thailand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Banded Sea Urchin (Echinothrix calamaris) in its natural habitat. As an echinoderm, this sea creature is closely related to starfish and exhibits a unique exoskeleton shell covered in spines that serve as its armor against predators. The banded sea urchin possesses two distinct types of spines: long, thin venomous ones capable of delivering a painful sting, and larger tubular spines with open ends. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly near coral reefs, this fascinating species can grow up to 15 centimeters in diameter. Its nocturnal nature allows it to feed on algae during the night by scraping it off rocks with its specialized mouthparts. This image was captured in the enchanting waters of the Andaman Sea located in Thailand. The intricate details showcased within this photograph highlight not only the striking appearance but also shed light on various aspects of marine biology and zoology. With its vibrant colors and delicate yet formidable structure, this banded sea urchin serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity found beneath our oceans' surfaces. Science Photo Library has beautifully encapsulated both the elegance and resilience exhibited by these remarkable creatures through their exceptional photography skills.
