EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the immense power and beauty of Hurricane Dean as it looms over the Earth on August 20,2007. The satellite image showcases our planet from a unique perspective, with North at the top and Hurricane Dean dominating the upper left corner in all its swirling glory. At this point, Hurricane Dean had intensified into a category 5 storm, boasting wind speeds exceeding 250 kilometers per hour and stretching across hundreds of kilometers. The photograph serves as a reminder of nature's raw force and unpredictability. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring sight, we are reminded of the devastating impact that hurricanes can have on land and sea alike. Just hours after this image was taken, Hurricane Dean made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula early in the morning of August 21. It is worth noting that this picture was obtained by NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-12), highlighting how advancements in technology allow us to observe and study these severe storms from space. This particular hurricane originated near Cape Verde islands over a week prior to reaching its full strength in the western Caribbean. As we contemplate this remarkable snapshot, let it serve as a testament to both the fragility and resilience of our planet in the face of such natural phenomena.
