The gatehouse known as The Barbican at Lanhydrock. The 17th century gatehouse predates the house which was largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1881. Built in the 17th century for the Robartes family, all that remained of the house after the fire was the north wing, the entrance porch and gatehouse. Built in the 17th century for the esteemed Robartes family, it predates the grand house that once stood nearby. Tragically, a devastating fire ravaged Lanhydrock House in 1881, leaving only remnants of its former glory: the north wing, entrance porch, and this magnificent gatehouse. Despite these ruins being all that remained of their ancestral home, the Robartes family generously gifted what was left to the National Trust in 1953.
