The new Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ) on the west of Cheltenham. 1, 500 of the 4, 000 staff have already moved into the 330 million building, known locally as the doughnut, which is due for completion later this year. GCHQ houses some of the most powerful computers in Europe and intercepts intelligence across a wide range of communications to provide support to organisations fighting drugs trafficking, arms proliferation and terrorism. *15/06/04: MPs condemned the spiralling costs of moving the Government's spy centre. The Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) listening station moved to a single site last year after occupying more than 50 buildings on two sites since the 1950s. The transfer was completed under a 489 million private finance initiative. But the GCHQ moved its technical capacity itself for security reasons. 29/06/04: The parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee - which oversees the works of the intelligence services - has said in its annual report Tuesdau June 29, 2004 that the focus on international terrorism is undermining the ability to deal with other security threats to the UK. The report revealed that the budget for the intelligence agencies had risen from 909 million in 2001-02 to more than 1.1 billion in the current year, with further increases in the pipeline
