EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking frontispiece illustrates the revolutionary journal "Pere Duchesne," which became notorious for its inflammatory content during the French Revolution. The image features Jacques Hebert, the editor of the paper, distributing copies to the French armies in 1793. Hebert's publication was known for its radical and provocative tone, often criticizing the actions of the more moderate National Assembly and the Girondin faction. Hebert's quarrels with the more influential figure of Maximilien Robespierre would ultimately lead to his downfall. As the Revolution entered a more radical phase, Hebert's paper became a thorn in the side of the Committee of Public Safety, which was led by Robespierre. Hebert's criticism of the Committee's policies and his calls for more radical action led to his arrest in March 1794. Despite his popularity among the radical elements of Parisian society, Hebert was brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal and found guilty of treason. He was sentenced to death by guillotine on March 24, 1794. This image serves as a reminder of the volatile political climate of the French Revolution, where even the most vocal critics of the established order could find themselves in grave danger. The events depicted in this frontispiece are a significant moment in the history of the French Revolution, highlighting the power of the press to shape public opinion and the dangers of political radicalism. This print, which comes from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into the tumultuous world of the French Revolution and the complex figures who shaped its course.
