Revolution of Theriso - The insurgents at Malaxa

In 1898, the Great Powers declared Crete as an independent Cretan State, under the rule of the Sultan. Yet, the administration of commander Prince George irritated the Cretans, who in March 1905 revolted - the famous Revolution of Theriso (the participants of which are depicted here), thus forcing Prince George to resign and appoint commandeer, Alexandros Zaimis. The leader of this revolt was Eleftherios Venizelos (1864 - 1936). This card shows the insurgents at Malaxa, a village in the Chania Prefecture on Crete. Date: 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Revolution of Theriso, a significant uprising in Crete's rich historical tapestry. In 1898, the Great Powers declared Crete an independent state under the Sultan's rule, but the administration of Prince George proved increasingly irritating to the Cretans. Tensions boiled over in March 1905, as insurgents, led by Eleftherios Venizelos, staged a rebellion in Malaxa, a village in the Chania Prefecture. The insurgents, dressed in traditional Cretan belts and armed with rifles and revolvers, are depicted here, standing defiantly against the backdrop of a rocky landscape. Venizelos, a key figure in the revolution, would eventually force Prince George to resign and appoint Commander Alexandros Zaimis. This powerful image serves as a testament to the courage and determination of the Cretan revolutionaries, who fought for their freedom and self-rule.
