Rene Descartes, French mathematician
Rene Descartes (1596-1650), French mathematician and philosopher, also known as Renatus Cartesius. Descartes most important scientific works were in mathematics, creating an analytical or co-ordinate geometry, known as Cartesian geometry, in which geometrical problems are converted into algebraic forms so that algebraic techniques may be applied to their solution. He attempted to explain planetary motions in terms of vortices surrounding the Sun, but this theory was later refuted. He is also considered the father of modern philosophy, and stated, " I think, therefore I am"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Rene Descartes, a renowned French mathematician and philosopher. Born in 1596, Descartes made significant contributions to various fields during his lifetime. His most notable scientific achievement was the development of Cartesian geometry, also known as analytical or co-ordinate geometry. In this mesmerizing illustration from the 17th century, we see a distinguished European male with an air of intellectual curiosity. The monochrome engraving captures the essence of Descartes' profound thoughts and ideas that shaped modern mathematics and philosophy. Descartes delved into explaining planetary motions by proposing vortices surrounding the Sun; however, this theory was later disproven. Despite this setback, he is widely regarded as the father of modern philosophy for his groundbreaking work. One cannot discuss Descartes without mentioning his famous statement: "I think, therefore I am". This philosophical concept encapsulates his belief in self-awareness and consciousness as fundamental aspects of human existence. Through this historical artwork, Science Photo Library pays homage to a Caucasian man whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Whether you are fascinated by history or intrigued by mathematical concepts, this print serves as a reminder of Descartes' immense influence on our understanding of both science and philosophy.
