In this historic moment captured by the Illustrated London News in March 1926, Princess Astrid of Sweden is seen waving to her bridegroom, Crown Prince Leopold, Duke of Brabant, as she arrives in Belgium, her new homeland. The civil marriage of the Swedish princess and the Belgian crown prince had taken place in Stockholm on the 4th of November 1926. The royal couple's union marked the end of a long-standing tradition of Swedish queens marrying into the Belgian royal family. Princess Astrid, dressed in a simple yet elegant outfit, looks radiant and happy as she steps onto the deck of the Fylgia, a Swedish warship, at Antwerp harbor. Her waving hand and warm smile convey her excitement and anticipation for her new life with her husband. Crown Prince Leopold, who is seen in military uniform, stands on the dock, eagerly awaiting his bride's arrival. The couple's families and dignitaries are also present, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. The Fylgia, which had sailed from Stockholm to Antwerp, had been decorated with Swedish and Belgian flags, symbolizing the unity of the two royal houses. The marriage of Princess Astrid and Crown Prince Leopold was a significant event in European royal history, as it strengthened the ties between Sweden and Belgium and brought a new queen to the Belgian court. The couple went on to have four children, and Princess Astrid became a beloved figure in Belgian society, known for her grace, kindness, and dedication to her new country. This photograph captures a moment of joy and anticipation in the lives of the royal couple, as they begin their new journey together.
