EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling Newton Abbot Station in Devon during the 1920s. As we gaze upon this snapshot of history, we are transported to a time when steam locomotives ruled the tracks and train travel was at its peak. Originally opened as Newton Station in December 1846 by the South Devon Railway Company, it wasn't until 1877 that it acquired its current name, Newton Abbot. By then, the station had already grown into a hub of activity with an impressive array of facilities including a large goods shed, train sheds, and busy workshops. These were instrumental in converting both stock and line to standard gauge. Between the two World Wars, Newton Abbot Station underwent an extensive extension and rebuild project. Finally completed in April 1927, it showcased a magnificent station building designed by Culverhouse. This architectural gem added elegance to an already thriving transportation hub. The photograph captures not only the physical structures but also hints at the energy and excitement that must have permeated through this vital transport artery during its heyday. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress while offering us a glimpse into our rich railway heritage. As we admire this remarkable piece from STEAM Museum of GWR (Great Western Railway), let us appreciate how far we've come since those early days of rail travel while cherishing these remnants of our past for generations to come.
