Spektr-R space telescope launch
Spektr-R space telescope launch. Zenit-3F rocket at launch site 45 (LC-45) at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, being used to launch the Russian Spektr-R radio space telescope. The space telescope is in the faring with the Fregat upper stage (top). This launch took place on 18 July 2011, shortly after this photograph was taken. Spektr-R, part of the Radioastron programme, is studying objects in radio wavelengths with a resolution far higher than previous telescopes. This high resolution is achieved by combining orbital observations with ground-based telescopes and using interferometry methods

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring launch of the Spektr-R space telescope from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Zenit-3F rocket stands tall at launch site 45, ready to propel this technological marvel into space. It is a moment frozen in time, taken on July 18th, 2011, just before this historic event unfolded. The Spektr-R radio space telescope, enclosed within its protective faring along with the Fregat upper stage, represents a significant advancement in astronomical technology. As part of the Radioastron program, it aims to study celestial objects using radio wavelengths with an unprecedented level of resolution. This breakthrough is made possible by combining orbital observations with ground-based telescopes and utilizing sophisticated interferometry methods. In this image, we witness the culmination of years of scientific research and engineering expertise as fuelled preparations are completed for liftoff. The gantry towers above like a sentinel guarding humanity's quest for knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. The Baikonur Cosmodrome serves as a symbol of human ambition and exploration in Asia's vast landscape. Cyrillic characters adorn various structures around the launch pad while technicians work meticulously to ensure every detail aligns perfectly for this momentous occasion. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded that it represents not only a remarkable achievement in astrophysics but also humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of our universe through space flight and cutting-edge technology.
