Bird flu research C015 / 8804
Bird flu research. Researcher measuring harvested influenza type a H7N9 viruses grown in the lab. This virus first emerged in the human population in China, in March 2013. The natural hosts of the virus are wild birds. Unusually, infected domestic chickens do not show symptoms, which increases the potential for spread to humans that have contact with chickens. A fifth of human infections are proving to be fatal. As of May 2013 no human to human transmission has been recorded. The cultured viruses will be used for research into the virus and the production of vaccines against it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library captures a crucial moment in bird flu research. In the image, an American female researcher can be seen meticulously measuring harvested influenza type A H7N9 viruses grown in the lab. This particular strain of virus emerged in China's human population back in March 2013, with wild birds acting as its natural hosts. What makes this virus particularly alarming is that infected domestic chickens do not display any symptoms, which significantly increases the risk of transmission to humans who come into contact with them. Shockingly, one-fifth of human infections have proven to be fatal thus far. However, as of May 2013, no instances of human-to-human transmission have been recorded. The cultured viruses depicted here will play a vital role in furthering our understanding of this pathogen and aid in the development of vaccines against it. The dedicated scientist shown carefully counting and measuring these samples represents countless researchers worldwide working tirelessly to combat infectious diseases like bird flu. With state-of-the-art equipment surrounding her within the laboratory setting, including a fume cupboard and isolation cabinet for safety precautions, she exemplifies the dedication and expertise required for such critical virological work. This powerful image serves as a reminder that scientific research plays an essential role in safeguarding public health on a global scale.
