EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century artwork showcases the intricate world of alchemy, depicted in a mesmerizing print. The image transports us to an alchemist's laboratory, where furnaces burn brightly amidst an array of alchemical elements. Each element is labeled in Latin, revealing their significance and importance within this mystical practice. From top to bottom, we encounter a sequence of elements: gold (aurum), mercury (argentum vivum), lead (plumbum), silver (argentum), bronze (aes), iron (ferrum), tin (stannum), water (aqua), and air (aer). These elements form the foundation for countless experiments and reactions that unfold within these walls. At the bottom of the print, two biblical quotes from Psalms chapter 12 verse 7 add a spiritual dimension to this scientific pursuit. One quote speaks of "silver tried in a furnace of earth" emphasizing the transformative nature of alchemy. The German engraver Georg Lichtensteger masterfully crafted this illustration with ornate borders and bilingual annotations. His attention to detail brings life to every corner of this historical scene.
