EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 20th century, capturing a charming scene of Vivian Terrace in Truro, Cornwall. The view from this angle showcases the grandeur of the terrace as it stretches into the distance towards Lemon Street's iconic Lander Monument. In this snapshot of history, we see life unfolding on Falmouth Road. A man gracefully pedals his bicycle along the road, adding a touch of movement to an otherwise still image. Outside one of the houses, a horse-drawn milk cart patiently waits with churns ready for delivery. Vivian Terrace itself is a testament to architectural beauty and heritage. These grade II listed buildings were constructed during the early to mid-19th century and have since become known by their numbered addresses: 1 through 21 Falmouth Road. The focal point of Lemon Street is undoubtedly the Lander Monument, designed by architect Philip Sambell in 1835. This monument commemorates Richard and John Lander's remarkable discoveries, including locating the source of River Niger. The statue depicting Richard was later added in 1852 by sculptor Neville Northy Burnard. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan, this image captures not only architectural splendor but also provides glimpses into daily life at that time – children playing nearby and railings lining both sides of the street. A true treasure from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, this print allows us to step back into history and appreciate both its architectural
