EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the renowned English physician, William Harvey (1578-1657), a pioneering figure in the history of medicine. Harvey is best known for his groundbreaking discovery and eloquent exposition of the circulation of blood. Born in Folkestone, Kent, England, Harvey studied at the University of Padua in Italy, where he was exposed to the works of Galen and Vesalius, which laid the foundation for his future research. Upon returning to England, Harvey began his career as a physician at the Court of King James I. However, it was not until 1616, while serving as a professor of anatomy at the Royal College of Physicians in London, that he conducted a series of experiments on the circulation of blood. In 1628, Harvey published his findings in a book titled "Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus," which translates to "An Anatomical Study of the Movement of the Heart and Blood in Living Beings." In this seminal work, Harvey presented his theory of the circulation of blood, which challenged the long-held belief that blood was created in the liver and only flowed towards the extremities. Instead, he demonstrated that the heart functioned as a pump, circulating blood throughout the body, and that the blood returned to the heart via the veins. Harvey's discovery revolutionized the scientific understanding of the human body and paved the way for future advancements in the fields of physiology and medicine. This image, captured by an unknown photographer and now available through Mary Evans Picture Library, serves as a testament to Harvey's enduring legacy and his invaluable contributions to the annals of medical history.
