EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Surrey (1443-1524), in a moment of quiet reflection before the Battle of Flodden in 1513. The Duke, dressed in full armor, kneels with his helmet off to the side, his hands clasped in prayer. The battle, which took place on September 9, 1513, was a significant engagement between the English and Scottish armies, with the English emerging victorious under the command of King Henry VIII. The Duke of Norfolk, a prominent figure in English politics and military affairs, played a crucial role in the lead up to the battle. He was appointed as the King's lieutenant in the northern marches and was tasked with raising an army to confront the Scottish threat. The Duke's leadership and military prowess were instrumental in securing the English victory. Despite his success on the battlefield, the Duke's life was marked by political intrigue and personal tragedy. He was twice married, firstly to Elizabeth of York, the sister of King Henry VII, and later to Catherine of Aragon, who would later become the first wife of Henry VIII. The Duke's involvement in the political maneuverings of the Tudor court would ultimately lead to his downfall, and he was executed in 1524 on charges of treason. This powerful image of the Duke of Norfolk, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and influential figure in English history. The Duke's intense focus and devotion in the moments before the Battle of Flodden serve as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination required to lead in times of conflict.
