This intriguing and thought-provoking image depicts a Suffragette Forcible Feeding insurance stamp from circa 1911. At a time when women's suffrage was a pressing issue and the Suffragette movement was gaining momentum, the concept of health insurance took on an unusual and symbolic meaning. Forcible feeding was a common tactic used against Suffragettes who went on hunger strike while imprisoned for protesting for their right to vote. The authorities believed that by force-feeding them, they could break the women's will and end their protests. However, this brutal practice sparked widespread public outrage and further fueled the Suffragettes' cause. In response to the forcible feeding of Suffragettes, the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) proposed the idea of a Suffragette Forcible Feeding insurance. This insurance would provide financial compensation to women who were subjected to this inhumane treatment. The stamp shown in the image was proposed to be used as part of the insurance scheme, with the instruction to "Lick" it to activate the coverage. The 1911 National Insurance Act, which was proposed around the same time, did not include women in its scope. This further highlighted the need for Suffragette-specific insurance and the ongoing struggle for women's rights. The image of the stamp serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and resilience of the Suffragettes, and the historical significance of their fight for women's suffrage.
