EDITORS COMMENTS
Stephen of Blois: The Red King of England (1135-1154) Stephen of Blois, born in 1096, ascended the English throne in 1135 following the death of his cousin, King Henry I. Known as 'Stephen of Blois' due to his ancestral ties to the County of Blois in France, he was the eldest son of Stephen, Count of Blois, and Adelaide del Vexin. In this evocative portrait, King Stephen is depicted wearing a red tunic, a symbol of his royal lineage. The tunic, adorned with intricate gold embroidery, is reminiscent of the opulence and grandeur associated with the English monarchy during this period. In his right hand, Stephen holds a gold coin, possibly a penny, which bears his image and the legend 'STEPHANUS REX ANGLIE ET DUX NORMANNIÆ.' This coin, a testament to his reign, further underscores his regal status. The image also reveals Stephen's profile, displaying his strong, determined features and the distinctive scar above his left eyebrow, which earned him the nickname 'Count Scrap' or 'Count the Scrap.' The scar, a result of a hunting accident, did not deter Stephen from his pursuit of power. The great seal, a crucial emblem of royal authority, is depicted in the lower part of the print. The seal, which bore Stephen's royal insignia, was used to authenticate official documents and decrees during his reign. The image of a crown and a sword, symbols of monarchical power and justice, are also featured on the seal. Stephen's reign, which lasted from 1135 to 1154, was marked by political instability and conflict, including the Anarchy, a civil war between Stephen and Empress Matilda, the daughter of Henry I. Despite these challenges, Stephen's legacy as the Red King of England endures, leaving a lasting impact on the history of the British Isles.
