EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the revered patron saint of Armenia and the first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Born around 257 AD in Armenia, Gregory was an apostle of the Christian faith who played a pivotal role in the spread of Christianity in the region. During his early life, Gregory was held captive in a pit for thirteen years, where he reportedly survived through a dove that brought him food and water. Upon his release, he traveled to Caesarea in Cappadocia, where he studied under Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus, a renowned bishop and miracle worker. After his studies, Gregory returned to Armenia, where he faced persecution for his Christian beliefs. He was eventually exiled to Sebaste, where he healed the king's wife of a debilitating illness, leading to the king's conversion to Christianity. With the king's support, Gregory was able to spread the faith throughout the land. Gregory's influence extended beyond Armenia, as he was also instrumental in the conversion of Georgia to Christianity. He is often referred to as the "Enlightener" or "Illuminator" of Armenia due to his role in bringing the light of Christianity to the region. In this image, Saint Gregory is depicted as a bishop, wearing the traditional vestments of the time. He is shown with a book in one hand and a cross in the other, symbolizing his role as a teacher and leader of the faith. The medieval setting of the image further emphasizes the historical significance of this important religious figure. Overall, this image of Saint Gregory the Illuminator offers a glimpse into the rich history of Christianity in the Middle East and the pivotal role that this saint played in the spread of the faith in Armenia.
