EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the intricately carved gargoyles of Llandaff Cathedral in Wales, a architectural and historical masterpiece that dates back to the 12th century. Among the many carved heads adorning the cathedral's facade, three regal figures stand out: Edward VII, George V, and Edward VIII. Edward VII, depicted in the center, was the King of the United Kingdom from 1901 to 1910. His reign marked the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of the 20th century. George V, carved to the right of Edward VII, reigned from 1910 to 1936. He oversaw significant changes in British society, including the granting of women's suffrage and the establishment of the Irish Free State. The figure on the far right is Edward VIII, who reigned for a brief period from 1936 until his abdication in 1936. His reign was marked by controversy, as he chose to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, against the wishes of the Church and the British people. These gargoyles, carved in the 1960s, serve as a testament to the rich history of British monarchy, stretching back to William the Conqueror. The intricate details of their faces and clothing, as well as their regal bearing, add to the grandeur of Llandaff Cathedral and remind us of the enduring legacy of the monarchy in British history.
