EDITORS COMMENTS
Francis Lombardi and Vittorio Suster: The Determined Italian Contenders of the MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race of 1934 This evocative photograph captures the determined spirit of Italian aviators Francis Lombardi and Vittorio Suster as they stand in front of their sleek Bergamaschi PL3 aircraft, I-TALY, at the MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race of October 1934. The race, also known as the MacQuesten Trans-Australian Air Race, was a grueling 11,000-mile (17,700 kilometers) contest that challenged the world's best pilots and their aircraft to complete the journey from London, England, to Melbourne, Australia, in the shortest time possible. Lombardi and Suster, representing their native Italy as entry No. 62, were eager to make their mark on aviation history. Their Bergamaschi PL3, a single-engine monoplane, was a testament to Italian engineering and design, boasting a top speed of 180 miles per hour (290 kilometers per hour). However, fate had other plans for the intrepid duo. Despite their preparation and dedication, I-TALY failed to start the race, leaving Lombardi and Suster disappointed but not defeated. The photograph encapsulates the excitement and anticipation of the race, as well as the unwavering resolve of Lombardi and Suster in the face of adversity. Their story serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of the early aviators who pushed the boundaries of flight and explored new frontiers in the name of competition and discovery.
