EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Clyde Pangborn (left), Col. Roscoe Turner, and Reeder Nichols, the intrepid crew of the Boeing 247D, NR257Y, Warner Bros. Comet, are seen upon their arrival at Plymouth, England, in October 1934. The trio had embarked on a daring transpacific flight from Seattle, Washington, to London, England, in preparation for the MacRobertson England to Australia air race. Pangborn, an American aviator, and Turner, a decorated military pilot and record-breaking aviator, had teamed up with Nichols, a Boeing test pilot, for the ambitious journey. Their Boeing 247D, a revolutionary aircraft for its time, was a sleek and modern monoplane that could reach impressive speeds and distances. The plane, named the Warner Bros. Comet, was also a promotional vehicle for the film studio, which had sponsored the flight. The crew's arrival in Plymouth marked a significant milestone in their journey, as they had successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first Americans to fly nonstop from the United States to Europe. They had faced numerous challenges during their flight, including extreme weather conditions and navigational difficulties, but their determination and skill had seen them through. The MacRobertson England to Australia air race, which began on November 20, 1934, was a grueling contest that tested the mettle of the world's best aviators. Pangborn, Turner, and Nichols, however, were no strangers to such challenges, and they went on to finish the race in an impressive third place, further cementing their place in aviation history. This photograph captures a moment of triumph and achievement, as the crew of the Warner Bros. Comet bask in the glow of their success at Plymouth, England, before embarking on their next great adventure.
