EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a scene from the historic play "Bajazet" by Jean Racine, first performed in 1672. The play, set in the Ottoman Empire, tells the tragic love story of Bajazet, the sultana Roxane, and the emperor Amurat. Bajazet, portrayed in this image with a determined expression, is the father of Andromaque, who is secretly in love with the emperor's son, Tite. Roxane, the beautiful sultana, is shown here with a look of longing and despair, as she is torn between her love for Bajazet and her duty to the emperor. Emperor Amurat, a powerful and jealous ruler, discovers the secret affair between Tite and Andromaque and orders Bajazet to be imprisoned. In a series of tragic events, Roxane is forced to choose between her love for Bajazet and her loyalty to the emperor. This print offers a glimpse into the rich history and intrigue of the Ottoman Empire and the complex emotions of love, duty, and power that are explored in Racine's classic play. The theatrical setting, with its grand costumes and dramatic lighting, adds to the sense of drama and suspense, making this a truly captivating image.
