Philippa of Hainault (1314?-1369), Queen of Edward III of England, is depicted in this beautiful 15th-century portrait. Born in Hainault, modern-day Belgium, Philippa was the eldest daughter of Count Guy of Flanders and his wife, Marguerite of Artois. Her marriage to Edward III of England in 1328 was a strategic alliance between the English and Flemish courts. Philippa brought significant cultural influences to the English court. She introduced Flemish weavers, who established a thriving textile industry in England.
