This evocative image captures the historic meeting of three great European leaders during the Napoleonic Wars, as Tsar Alexander I of Russia, Napoleon Bonaparte of France, and Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia come together on a raft in the Niemen River on June 25, 1807. The location, the border between Prussian and Russian territory in Poland, was chosen for the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit, an agreement that marked a turning point in the conflict. The three men, dressed in their military uniforms, approach the raft from different directions. Tsar Alexander I, the youngest of the three, is shown rowing a small boat towards the raft, while Napoleon, the charismatic and ambitious French leader, is depicted standing confidently on the riverbank, his arms crossed. Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia, the elder statesman, is already on the raft, seated in a simple hut, likely to keep out of the sun.
