This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three fascinating European wildlife species: the European tree frog (Hyla arborea), the water rail (Rallus aquaticus), and the corn crake or landrail (Crex crex). The European tree frog, also known as the green tree frog, is depicted perched on a branch, its vibrant green body contrasting against the brown bark. With its large, sticky pads and webbed feet, this amphibian is well-adapted to climbing trees and leaping from branch to branch. Beside the tree frog, a water rail wades through the shallow water, its long, slender body and distinctive crest making it an easily recognizable marsh dweller. This elusive bird is an excellent swimmer and diver, using its long, pointed beak to probe for food in the water. In the background, a corn crake or landrail is shown peering out from the tall grasses. This ground-dwelling bird is known for its distinctive, booming call and cryptic plumage, which allows it to blend seamlessly into its grassy habitat.
