This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving showcases three fascinating plants from the botanical world: Moth Mullein, Verbascum blattaria, and Cowslip, Primula veris. The engraving is taken from the Krauterbuch, or Herbal, by Adam Lonicer, published in Frankfurt in 1557. This particular print is believed to be from a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, featuring captions in various languages, including Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and English manuscript. The Moth Mullein, also known as Common Mullein or Great Mullein, is depicted on the left. Its botanical name, Verbascum blattaria, refers to the large, moth-like leaves that give this plant its distinctive appearance. Traditionally used for medicinal purposes, Moth Mullein was believed to have properties that soothed the lungs and relieved coughs. In the center, the Cowslip, or Primula veris, is depicted in full bloom. Its botanical name, Primula veris, means "first primrose," as it is one of the earliest primroses to bloom in the spring.
