EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 724, featuring the Hymenopteran species Cleptes nitidulus (syn. nitidula), a gemlike parasitic wasp. The wasp is depicted in its natural habitat, perched on the delicate leaves of Trinia glauca, also known as dwarf burnet saxifrage. The entomological plate, published between 1824 and 1839, is a remarkable testament to the intricate detail and precision of natural history illustration during the 19th century. The wasp, a member of the family Ledipoteridae, is known for its distinctive metallic green and blue body, with a slender, elongated abdomen. The female wasp lays its eggs inside the nests of solitary bees, such as Andrena spp., and the developing wasp larvae feed on the bee larvae. The accompanying plant, Trinia glauca, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial native to Europe and Asia. Its small, pink or white flowers bloom in late spring and early summer, attracting a variety of pollinators, including bees and wasps. This exquisite plate, created by the skilled hand of the renowned botanical illustrator John Curtis FLS, showcases the intricate relationship between insects and their plant hosts, providing valuable insights into the natural world of the 1820s and 1830s. The intricate details of the wasp and the delicate beauty of the dwarf burnet saxifrage are rendered with exceptional accuracy, making this plate a must-have for any natural history or entomology collection.
