Music cover for Chilperic Quadrilles
Music cover for the Chilperic Quadrilles, based on airs from Herves opera buffa (or operetta) Chilperic, arranged (probably for piano) by C H R Marriott. Herves Chilperic was a medieval burlesque, as can be seen from the crowd of people in medieval dress, with rather modern-looking umbrellas. It was based on the story of the Merovingian King Chilperic I (ruled 561-584). After launching in Paris in 1868, the operetta was put on at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1870

EDITORS COMMENTS
This music cover for the Chilperic Quadrilles showcases the lively and humorous spirit of the operetta, Chilperic, composed by C.H.R. Marriott. Based on airs from the medieval burlesque opera buffa (comic opera) by Herve, the scene depicts a lively crowd of people dressed in medieval attire, complete with donkeys and horses, yet carrying modern-looking umbrellas. The operetta, which premiered in Paris in 1868 and was later performed at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1870, was a comedic take on the story of Merovingian King Chilperic I, who ruled from 561 to 584. The cover's playful composition, featuring a royal procession with a king and his entourage riding on a mule and a horse, adds to the operetta's light-hearted and entertaining nature. The quadrilles, a popular dance form during the 1870s, further emphasize the lively and joyful atmosphere of the music. The cover's intricate details and vibrant colors bring the historical and comic elements of the operetta to life, making it a delightful addition to any music collection.
