EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a promotional music sheet for "The Rifle Quadrilles of 1859" by C.H.R. Marriott. The Quadrille was a popular dance in the 19th century, and this rendition, with its military theme, was undoubtedly meant to appeal to the patriotic fervor of the time. The years around 1860 were marked by hysteria over the possibility of a French invasion, and the Volunteer movement saw over 160,000 men joining its ranks. Despite the lack of evidence of lady volunteers, this illustration shows women standing proudly with their rifles, ready to defend their country. One lady even salutes her male counterpart, adding a sense of camaraderie and unity to the scene. The uniforms worn by these ladies are reminiscent of those seen in other images of the time and were a common motif in music hall entertainment. This illustration is not only a testament to the spirit of the times but also a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the enjoyment and leisure activities of the 1860s. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the artwork make it a true visual treat, making it an excellent addition to any collection of historical illustrations or music memorabilia.
