By February 1862, 160, 000 men had joined the Volunteer movement. although there was no evidence that there were lady volunteers, although the same uniform appears several times in images of the time and the subject was a popular one for the music halls. These ladies stand ready with their guns to repel any invaders, and one can be seen saluting smartly to her male counterpart. Date: 1859
