EDITORS COMMENTS
Mountjoy Blount, Baron Blount, also known as the Earl of Newport, is depicted in this elegant portrait painted between 1597 and 1666. Mountjoy was a natural son of Charles Blount, the Earl of Devonshire, and is shown here in fine attire, wearing a falling ruff, a popular fashion accessory of the time. The ruff, made of starched linen or wool, was worn around the neck and chest, and was often adorned with lace or fringe. Mountjoy's attire suggests that he was a man of wealth and status, and the portrait captures his refined and sophisticated appearance. Mountjoy's illegitimate birth did not prevent him from achieving prominence in English society. He was created a baron in 1627, and later became the Earl of Newport in 1643. Despite his illegitimacy, Mountjoy was accepted into the highest circles of the English nobility, and was a patron of the arts and a supporter of the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. This portrait offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the English aristocracy during the late Tudor and early Stuart periods, and serves as a reminder of the complex social dynamics of the time.
