EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Earl and Countess of Norbury, an esteemed peerage family, making their significant contributions to the war effort during World War I. The Earl, age fifty-three, is seen here in his humble role as a fitter in an aeroplane factory in Surrey. Dressed in overalls and donning a protective cap, he blends in with the other dedicated workers, all striving to produce essential aircraft for the British military. His noble title and privileged background are momentarily set aside as he receives the standard wage of 7d per hour, working diligently from 6 am to 6 pm. In stark contrast, Lady Norbury is depicted in a separate scene, assisting at a buffet in one of London's bustling rail stations. Her elegant attire and graceful demeanor are a stark contrast to the industrial surroundings of the factory. Yet, she is fully committed to her role, providing free meals to soldiers and sailors returning home from leave. This powerful image showcases the unwavering spirit of the British nobility during the war, as they put aside their privileged lives to make a difference on the home front. The Earl and Countess of Norbury, like countless other titled individuals, demonstrated their patriotism and dedication to the war effort by embracing the roles of a fitter and a volunteer, respectively. This poignant portrait from 1915 serves as a testament to the unity and resilience of the British people during the Great War.
