Buckingham Gate in 1830, (1881). Creator: Unknown

Buckingham Gate in 1830, (1881). Buckingham Gate, also known as the York Watergate, was built in 1626 and gave access to the River Thames from York House, a mansion on the Strand in London. The building of the Thames Embankment in the 1860s left it 150 yards from the river. From Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places. Westminster and the Western Suburbs, by Edward Walford, Vol. III. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. London, Paris & New York, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting Buckingham Gate in 1830. The image, created by an unknown artist in 1881, showcases the architectural marvel that was once known as the York Watergate. Built in 1626, this gate provided access to the River Thames from York House, a grand mansion situated on London's Strand. However, with the construction of the Thames Embankment in the 1860s, Buckingham Gate found itself distanced from its watery companion by a staggering 150 yards. Despite this separation from its original purpose, it stands tall and proud against the backdrop of Westminster and the Western Suburbs. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless charm to this snapshot of history. As we gaze upon this scene frozen in time, we can't help but imagine what life must have been like during those centuries past. The swans gracefully gliding along the river add an ethereal touch to an already picturesque landscape. Edward Walford's publication "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History" provides further insight into this architectural gem and its significance within British history. This print serves as a reminder of our rich heritage and invites us to appreciate both old-world charm and modern progress that coexist harmoniously within our vibrant cityscape.
