Born in 1474 in Seville, Spain, Las Casas is best known for his advocacy on behalf of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. He arrived in the New World in 1502 as a plantation owner but soon became horrified by the atrocities committed against the natives. Las Casas dedicated the latter part of his life to defending their rights and promoting their welfare. He wrote extensively on the subject, including the influential work "A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies," which exposed the brutal treatment of the natives by the Spanish conquistadors. Despite facing opposition from powerful figures, Las Casas remained steadfast in his convictions. His unwavering sympathy for the natives earned him the admiration and respect of many, including these Native Americans who came to pay their respects during his final days.
