EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the moment of reconciliation between Bartolome de Las Casas, the renowned Spanish historian and missionary, and a group of Native Americans on his deathbed. Born in 1474 in Seville, Spain, Las Casas is best known for his advocacy on behalf of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. He arrived in the New World in 1502 as a plantation owner but soon became horrified by the atrocities committed against the natives. Las Casas dedicated the latter part of his life to defending their rights and promoting their welfare. He wrote extensively on the subject, including the influential work "A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies," which exposed the brutal treatment of the natives by the Spanish conquistadors. Despite facing opposition from powerful figures, Las Casas remained steadfast in his convictions. His unwavering sympathy for the natives earned him the admiration and respect of many, including these Native Americans who came to pay their respects during his final days. The photograph captures a poignant moment of recognition and appreciation between Las Casas and the indigenous people, a testament to the enduring impact of his work and legacy. Dated from 1474 to 1566, Las Casas' life spanned a critical period in the history of the Americas. His advocacy for the rights of the indigenous peoples challenged the prevailing attitudes of his time and paved the way for future efforts to promote social justice and human rights.
