EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print depicts a significant event from the New Testament of the Bible, the visit of the Magi, or Three Wise Men, to the infant Jesus. The scene is believed to have taken place in the 1st century in Bethlehem, Palestine. According to the biblical account, the Magi were astrologers from the East who followed a star to the birthplace of the newborn King of the Jews. Upon finding Jesus, they presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This beautiful artwork, which dates back to the 15th century, is attributed to the English printer William Caxton. Caxton is considered a pioneer of the mechanical printing press in Europe and is known for his significant contributions to the spread of literacy and the dissemination of knowledge during the Renaissance. This print is a testament to the enduring power of religious art to inspire awe and wonder, as well as to preserve and transmit the stories and teachings of the past. The Magi, dressed in rich robes and bearing their gifts, kneel before the humble manger where the baby Jesus lies, surrounded by his mother Mary and the ox and donkey that symbolize the simple, rural setting of the Nativity. The peaceful and serene atmosphere of the scene invites contemplation and reflection, reminding us of the profound significance of the birth of Jesus and the hope and light that it brought to the world.
