EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite pen and ink sketch captures the contemplative gaze and plump features of Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre (1749-1822), a renowned French astronomer of the early 19th century. Delambre's profound contributions to the field of astronomy, particularly his work on the measurement of the arc of the meridian, earned him a place among the greatest scientific minds of his time. Born in Dijon, France, Delambre displayed an early aptitude for mathematics and physics. He began his scientific career as an assistant to Pierre-Simon Laplace at the Paris Observatory, where he honed his skills in astronomical observation and calculation. In 1795, Delambre was appointed as the Director of the Paris Observatory, a position he held until his retirement in 1821. Delambre's most significant work was his measurement of the arc of the meridian, which he carried out between 1799 and 1804 with his colleague Pierre-François Méchain. This groundbreaking project involved measuring the angle between two meridians at different longitudes, providing crucial data for the determination of the shape and size of the Earth. Delambre's meticulous work laid the foundation for the modern science of geodesy. This historical portrait, created in 1822, offers a glimpse into the life of this brilliant and dedicated astronomer. Delambre's furrowed brow and introspective expression reveal the depth of his concentration and his unwavering commitment to scientific discovery. The intricate details of the ink sketch capture the subtle textures of his face, bringing Delambre's legacy to life for future generations.
