EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the spirit of camaraderie and nostalgia that filled the air as members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a veterans organization for Union soldiers of the American Civil War, gathered for their annual reunion on Rock Island, Illinois in the late 1880s. The Great Rock Island Route, depicted in this photograph, was a popular and scenic railroad journey that brought thousands of veterans and their families to the event each year. The Grand Army of the Republic was established in 1866, and by the late 1880s, its membership had grown to over 400,000. The organization provided a sense of belonging and support for veterans, many of whom had endured great hardships during the war and in its aftermath. The reunions offered an opportunity for these veterans to reconnect with old friends, share stories, and pay tribute to their fallen comrades. The image shows a long line of passengers, many of them dressed in their finest Sunday best, waiting to board the train that would take them to the reunion. The train, with its gleaming engines and elegant carriages, is a testament to the progress and prosperity of post-Civil War America. In the background, the mighty Mississippi River flows peacefully, reflecting the sense of tranquility and unity that the G.A.R. embodied. The Great Rock Island Route to the reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic was more than just a simple train journey; it was a pilgrimage, a symbol of the enduring bond between the veterans and their shared history. This photograph captures a moment in time, a moment of pride and unity, that resonated deeply with the veterans and their families, and continues to inspire us today.
