The image is taken from Sketch 146 of Thomas Baines' original collection, created in April 1869 during his extensive exploration of Africa in the 19th century. Baines, a renowned artist and explorer, expertly captured the raw power and energy of this even-toed ungulate, a member of the Bovidae family and the Artiodactyla order. The black wildebeest, also known as the Connochaetes gnou or Puroomo Catoblepas, is a large and distinctive animal native to Africa. With its black body, long, curved horns, and distinctive white markings on its face and rump, it is a striking sight to behold.
