In this stunning and intricately detailed illustration from John James Audubon's "Birds of America," we find the majestic Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni), depicted in Plate 372. This magnificent bird of prey, a member of the Accipitridae family, is shown in mid-flight, its sharp eyes fixed intently on its prey below. The hawk's powerful wings carry it through the daytime sky, its beak open wide in anticipation of the hunt. The illustration's subject is a Lagomorpha, specifically a Hare (Lepus), which has been startled and frozen in fear as the hawk approaches. The hare's large ears are pressed flat against its body, its hind legs tensed, and its eyes wide with terror.
