Amidst the ruins of war: American soldiers making their way through the devastated streets of Varennes-en-Argonne, France, during the final months of World War I. The small town, located in the northeastern part of the country, had been the site of intense fighting between Allied and German forces in the autumn of 1918. The once peaceful landscape was now a maze of bombed-out buildings, twisted rails, and debris. The soldiers, dressed in their olive drab uniforms and wearing helmets, carefully navigated the treacherous terrain, their expressions a mix of determination and weariness.
