EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a partial view of the remarkable "Building Sepulchrum Adriani" series. Created by Lambert Suavius, a Netherlandish artist between 1510 and 1576, this etching is believed to be based on an earlier print attributed to the master GA, an Italian artist from 1535. The artwork depicts a perspectival depiction of a part of the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, known as Sepulchrum Adriani. The central plan is characterized by two circular floors resting upon a rectangular base. The structure is crowned with a rectangular lantern that adds grandeur and elegance to its overall design. Measuring approximately 5 1/2 by 3 1/8 inches (139.8 cm), this detailed etching offers viewers a glimpse into the intricate architectural elements and ruins captured in vivid detail. Each line and curve tells a story of ancient craftsmanship and historical significance. As we gaze at this mesmerizing image, we are transported back in time to witness the magnificence of Roman architecture through Suavius' skilled interpretation. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an educational tool for those who appreciate history and art alike.
