In this print titled "Marskramer robbed by monkeys" we are transported back to the year 1562, where Pieter van der Heyden and Joannes Galle beautifully captured a whimsical scene. The image depicts a peddler peacefully resting, unaware of mischievous monkeys lurking nearby. The monkeys, with their mischievous nature, have taken advantage of the sleeping merchant. They have skillfully opened his basket of merchandise and now playfully ridicule him by wearing his hat and dancing around in a group. Some even make music using various objects they find within reach. One monkey has gone as far as loosening the man's pants while another pinches its nose due to an unpleasant stench. To add insult to injury, one cheeky primate even poops on the poor peddler's hat! Despite being robbed and ridiculed, there is an undeniable sense of contentment among these playful creatures. Their carefree attitude reminds us not to take life too seriously and find joy in unexpected moments.
