EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Satyr Family" by Benedetto Montagna, dates back to the 16th century, around 1512 or 1520. Montagna, an Italian artist of the High Renaissance period, masterfully depicted the mythological scene of a satyr family enjoying the pleasures of the outdoors. The image is filled with vibrant energy and merriment, as the satyrs and satyress engage in various musical activities. In the center, a satyr plays a pipe, his long, curved horn held to his lips, while a satyress accompanies him on a wind instrument. Another satyr strums a lute, his eyes closed in concentration, lost in the music. The family is gathered outside, surrounded by lush greenery and natural beauty. The women, dressed in flowing robes, are adorned with flowers and jewelry, adding to the idyllic setting. The satyrs, half-human, half-animal figures, are known for their love of wine, music, and the company of women. This print, with its rich history and intriguing mythological subject matter, is a testament to the artistic heritage of the Renaissance period. It invites us to imagine a world filled with music, nature, and the simple pleasures of life. The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. is fortunate to have this rare and beautiful work in its collection, allowing us to appreciate the artistry of Benedetto Montagna and the captivating world of the satyr family.
