Present at the opening were Samuel Morton Peto, a partner of the firm of Peto, Brassey, and Betts, and engineer George Parker Bidder....his Majesty...received the English railway party with great courtesy, surrounded by his staff; and having expressed how much he was gratified by the unexpected promptitude with which the railway had been completed, proceeded to the station...'. The railway, built primarily by British engineers and financiers, including Samuel Morton Peto and George Parker Bidder, was completed ahead of schedule, surprising and delighting Frederick VII, King of Denmark.
