Her Majestys Entree in to Coburg, 1845. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
Her Majestys Entree in to Coburg, 1845. Royal visit to Germany: crowds line the streets as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert pass under a triumphal arch with a sign saying Wilkommen. The reception was not so much a state ceremonial, as a warm and affectionate family meeting; the same feeling seems to pervade the inhabitants of the place; they have decorated the town in every part; but it is with all the emblems of cheerfulness and festivity, rather than those of dignity and state. Every house, every street, is festooned with garlands and wreaths, disposed with exceeding taste; at some distance from the gate by which the Queen entered, a triumphal Gothic arch was thrown across the road, formed of evergreens, surmounted by flags, and bearing the word which is pleasing in all languages: " Welcome". From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

Her Majesty's Entree in to Coburg, 1845 - A Joyful Royal Visit
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Ebenezer Landells, we are transported back to the year 1845 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert embarked on a royal visit to Germany. The image depicts a momentous occasion as the royal couple passes under a magnificent triumphal arch adorned with the word "Wilkommen" warmly welcoming their arrival. The scene is filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and festivity. As crowds line the streets of Coburg, it becomes evident that this reception was not merely a state ceremonial but rather an affectionate family meeting. The inhabitants have gone above and beyond to decorate every house and street with garlands and wreaths, exuding cheerfulness throughout the town. Landells' engraving beautifully captures the essence of this historic event. From horse-drawn carriages carrying dignitaries to military escorts accompanying Her Majesty, every detail showcases the grandeur of the occasion. The architectural features add depth to the composition while emphasizing both dignity and state. This image serves as a metaphor for unity between nations as well; it transcends language barriers by bearing the universally pleasing word "Welcome". It symbolizes not only Britain's diplomatic ties with Germany but also highlights Queen Victoria's role as Empress of India. Ebenezer Landells' masterful work immortalizes this significant moment in history, allowing us to witness firsthand the warmth and adoration bestowed upon Queen Victoria during her visit to Coburg in 1845.
