(The Achilleion, Transformed into an Ambulance, is Placed under the Guard of Our Alpines), is a photograph taken by Robert Vaucher in 1916. This image captures the transformation of the once grand and ornate Achilleion Palace in Corfu, Greece, into a military hospital during the First World War. The Achilleion was a beautiful country house and villa, adorned with numerous statues and works of art. However, with the outbreak of war, the French and German armies clashed in the region, and the palace was commandeered and requisitioned for use as a military hospital. In this photograph, we see the Achilleion, now converted into an ambulance, guarded by Alpine soldiers. The Alpine troops, who were responsible for the protection of the palace, the gardens, and the countless works of art, are seen standing at attention in the foreground. The soldiers, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, appear both solemn and determined, a stark contrast to the peaceful surroundings of the palace and its gardens.
