EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Juxon, an influential figure in English history during the 17th century. The creator of this portrait remains unknown, adding a sense of mystery to the already intriguing subject. Juxon was an English churchman who received his education at St Johns College, Oxford. Throughout his career, he held significant positions such as Bishop of London from 1633 to 1649 and Archbishop of Canterbury from 1660 until his death. His close relationship with Charles I led to him being appointed Lord High Treasurer of England and First Lord of the Admiralty. The engraving is taken from "Biographical Illustrations" by Alfred Howard, published in 1830 by Thomas Tegg, R. Griffin and Co. , J. Cumming in London, Glasgow, and Dublin. It offers a glimpse into the fashion and style prevalent during that era with its depiction of Juxon's clerical clothing. Juxtaposed against a backdrop marked by political turmoil including the English Civil War and religious conflicts within Christianity, this portrait symbolizes stability amidst chaos. It serves as a reminder not only of Juxon's important role but also highlights key historical events that shaped Britain during that time. This image invites us to delve deeper into British history while appreciating both its artistic value and historical significance.
